Education Programs

Integral to every exhibition supported by the Women's Board is an education component that enhances the experience for children and youth in the Santa Barbara community. The Women's Board has also provided direct financial support to several Museum education programs for children.

Art in Motion brings hand-on, creative art activities to homeless or at-risk children and their families in collaboration with Storyteller Children’s Center. Permanent ceramic installations created by the children can be seen at the Storyteller location at 2121 De La Vina Street. The 2009 project explored the theme of art and nature.

Homework / Artwork After School offers free homework help as well as arts enrichment. The program is currently active at Franklin, Cleveland, and Cesar Chavez Schools and also involves a number of elementary school students from other Santa Barbara neighborhoods. The 2008 installation of the tile mural Family/La Familia (below left) can be seen at the Eastside Branch of the Santa Barbara Public Library, 1102 East Montecito Street.

PAL After School Art Program is a collaboration with the Police Activities League and involves over 100 fifth graders in the creation and appreciation of art. Projects utilize a variety of media and are inspired by the Museum’s collection or special exhibitions. Students meet one afternoon per week for eight weeks at the Museum’s Ridley-Tree Education Center at McCormick House, 1600 Santa Barbara Street. Each eight-week session includes a visit to the Museum and a reception for the students and their families.
